Will the training last?

Zeus's lessons are where the homework gets cancelled and replaced. Her earlier lesson supplies the mirror image - how a behaviour arrives in the first place. Something that worked once in a while got labelled in her mind as available, which is exactly why the answer has to be every single time rather than usually. Between them the family are given a model of both directions rather than an instruction, which is why it survives contact with a situation the trainer did not anticipate.

Roxy's handover is the most complete aftercare briefing in the corpus, and it contains three things nobody else says. The marker's decay is described in one line - it will die a horrible death, and the dog will think it does not mean anything - and the month of backing it is named as training for the handler rather than for the dog, producing the mechanics to say the word and get to the button quickly. The failure mode is stated in concrete terms right after the family say they feel good: stop maintaining it, and the old behaviours return and it becomes a problem, with a truck-and-new-engine analogy attached. And the aftercare advice is about the owner's own words - text early, and say I need help rather than you guys, because the first version is easier to answer well. Two predictions come with it, both about the first week: the dogs come back wound up and take about a week to simmer down, and the weight and appetite changes of kennel life reverse at home.

Lola's case closes the lesson with the plainest statement of the decay rule anywhere: stop reinforcing the commands and stop penalising what you do not like, and the behaviours come back and the commands weaken. Her go-home lesson adds the one condition the trainers attach to the support they offer afterwards, and it is a training claim rather than a commercial one - if a family starts blending other methods in, nobody can account for what the dog is responding to any more, because the dog now has several different inputs rather than one. What should I do when something goes wrong?

Message early, and phrase it as a request. Two handovers give the same advice from different directions: the sooner you text about something you need help with the better it goes, because a trainer cannot help with what he does not know about; and the version that starts I need help gets a more useful answer than the version that starts you guys. There is also a standing offer at the end of the program rather than a full stop - the last recorded words of one case are simply an invitation to get in touch.

He came home skinny and wound up. Is that the program?

Both are predicted at the first lesson. The dogs come back from a fortnight or more of concentrated activity and take about a week to simmer down - the same window as the settling week. And the weight is explained as an artefact of kennel life rather than health: appetite drops a little and activity is very high, they do not laze about, and the trainer says she will probably put it back on at home. Neither is a reason to relax the rules in that week, which is the week the rules matter most.
